Mastering Persuasion: From Force to Flow
Persuasion isn’t about pressure, it’s about connection.
I’ve spent years studying what it truly means to persuade, not manipulate, not pressure, but genuinely connect. For me, persuasion mastery isn’t about forcing an outcome. It’s about creating a space where connection, clarity, and trust naturally lead someone to a decision.
When I talk about persuasion, I’m really talking about my ability to relate, to meet someone where they are, understand them, and guide them toward a new perspective. It’s the art of conversation. It’s being able to communicate in a way that resonates so deeply that the other person feels seen, heard, and understood.
In business, especially in sales, persuasion becomes even more practical. It’s the ability to present a product or service with confidence, while building rapport through small talk, asking the right questions, and establishing trust. But the real magic happens in what I call relaxed relatability. When I’m relaxed, present, and not attached to the outcome, that’s when the strongest connections are formed.
Early on, I didn’t understand this. I thought persuasion meant pushing harder, trying to “get the sale,” or convincing someone. But that energy, force, comes from desperation. And people feel it immediately.
There’s a big difference between force and power.
Force is driven by fear, scarcity, and the need to control. Power, on the other hand, comes from clarity and certainty. When I’m in my power, I’m not trying to get anything from anyone. I’m simply sharing something I believe in, and allowing the other person to decide if it’s right for them.
One of the tools that helped me understand this at a deeper level is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Through NLP, I learned about techniques like embedded commands, subtle ways of guiding conversations and anchoring ideas. It’s not about manipulation; it’s about communicating more effectively and intentionally.
I was first introduced to these concepts back in the early 1990s during my recovery journey. At the time, I was rebuilding my life, starting a business, and searching for answers. I came across foundational NLP books like Frogs into Princes and later dove deeper into persuasion through works like Persuasion Engineering.
But more important than the techniques was the inner work.
I had to confront my own patterns, feelings of not being good enough, scarcity, and emotional attachment to outcomes. I realized that I was unconsciously attracting situations that reinforced those beliefs. Even in business, I was trying to persuade from a place of lack, which made my efforts feel forced and ineffective.
Everything changed when I began to let go.
Letting go of guilt. Letting go of shame. Letting go of the need to control outcomes. Through that process, my energy shifted. My communication changed. And persuasion became something entirely different, it became natural.
I stopped trying to convince people and started connecting with them.
Today, when I speak, coach, or present an offer, I do it from a place of belief and alignment. I genuinely believe in what I offer and in the value it brings. Because of that, persuasion no longer feels like a task, it feels like an extension of who I am.
It’s effortless. It’s authentic. It’s grounded in service.
And here’s what I’ve learned: when you operate from that space, you attract people who are aligned with you. People who believe what you believe. People who are ready, willing, and open.
That’s the real power of persuasion.
It’s not about getting others to say yes.
It’s about becoming someone people naturally trust, resonate with, and choose.
